Lando bids a farewell to shadow selves with his new single and video, Believe Me Lonely
Lando Chill’s persona is similar to his namesake, but don’t be mistaken, his chillness is packed with power and dedication. With around nine albums and EPs total as well as singles released both solo and in collaboration spread throughout the last decade, Lando Chill has been making waves with roots in Chicago, Tuscan, and Los Angeles.
Lando’s music pulls from funk, reggae, spoken word, and more. His genre is clearer defined by his vulnerable, poetic, story-telling lyricism and his emphatic, intentional enunciation. His voice moves with the story he’s telling; he can be brooding and vulnerable in one track and then hit us hard in the hips with a party banger in the next. He sprinkles his signature “chill” charm over every track and project, giving a charismatic consistency and familial connection amongst all his music.
Lando Chill has evolved so much since his first album, “For Mark, Your Son,” with several songs hitting over a million listens on Spotify. I remember when I was first introduced to Lando Chill via his song, ‘Early in the Morning.’ A tired and stoned junior in college, I was excited and immediately drawn to the song’s nostalgic Cali-in-the-nineties beat and Lando’s energetic vocal. What excited me even more was learning more about Lando after hearing his music. Humble, but brilliant, Lando wears his heart on his sleeve and fights for those who may not have a platform or voice. Aside from his music, Lando is an activist, centering the fight against systemic racism and capitalism literally every day, whether reminding us who’s names we need to continue saying or what traditions we may want to rethink. He expresses himself through his music, education, poetry, and even fashion. Just last year, Lando launched ‘We Must Make Space’ where he opens his extremely hip and fashionable home and closet up for styling consultations with a focus on up-cycled clothing.
Lando Chill wears several hats but music is where he can step outside of all the hats that crowdedly encompasses his life and career. A confident and electrifying performer, Lando has new music on the way and this project is his most vulnerable yet; a time-stamp of his recent journey where he dug up pieces of himself that were buried deep.
Up first for Lando’s new music isBelieve Me Lonely, just dropped alongside a compelling video on 3/15/23. The song is groovy with hints of disco as Lando shifts back and forth between rapping and singing with wordplay alluding to ghosting and fear of someone seeing who you truly are. “Holdin’ it back, can’t notice. I just live the lie. When you gonna make me see, when you gonna make believe, me lonely?” Lando pulls from the idea of laying next to the person he loves, secrets and nightmares bubbling up inside of him causing him to predict and dream up a breakup that hasn’t even happened yet.
The video does the stand alone song utmost justice with poignant imagery showing Lando’s shadow selves, crisscrossing between two lives and personas- the one who’s masking, hiding, using vices, and the one who’s himself, vulnerable, healing. The video was shot by Sinah Ober and Clifford Gilmore and directed by Lando and Sinah.
Lando plans to release a string of songs that continue the unguarded and unapologetic qualities of Believe Me Lonely in upcoming months. Follow Lando Chill on Instagram and Bandcamp to stay tuned for his new music.
