Instantly hooked. Takara’s Australian-meets-Chicago accent draws you in; intrigues you. Who is she? 

I’m everything you want, croons the songstress. Then we get to the spoken word verse, and she’s sure of herself. She’s better than him; she’s better than “bad love.”

When I listen to Takara, I find myself drawn to her grittiness. She sings of love and loss and self-discovery, but she sings it through a lens that isn’t sugarcoating anything. Many pop stars go the route they know will win – easygoing tempos with simple lyrics. But Takara doesn’t need to follow that formula because her voice already carries the thing so many can’t find: real emotion. 

Her lyrics read as poetry, expressing complex thoughts in imagery she paints with her own words. Listening feels different when you know something has come straight from the heart. 

‘Bad’ explores a woman who knows her worth – she’s well aware that the someone she’s messing around with is exactly that: a mess. At the start of the song, she kind of thrives in it. She knows she’s the one driving him crazy, and she likes it. By the end, though, she realizes she doesn’t need the thrill of bad decisions to get her off. She just needs herself. 

I hope you think of me when sleeping in the bed you made / and understand, you ain’t a man, and I will never feel the same.
