Takara is an Australian-born, Chicago-built, LA-based singer who possesses not only a powerful voice, but the ability to put her innermost thoughts and feelings into written word. It’s crazy to think she hasn’t been doing this her entire life, because the talent comes so naturally. She’s able to take painful situations and turn them into something beautiful – it’s not about the heartbreak, it’s about the idea you were ever able to love. To feel. The emptiness of loss is replaced with the reminder that to experience love at all is a gift. Pair this with beautiful pipes, and you’ve got the makings of a pop star.
She started really making music after her big move to America, in a studio she set up in her Logan Square bedroom closet. Working with producers and beats she found online, Takara began to build her following solely by reaching out and making herself known. Through Instagram posts and Tik Toks, Takara quickly turned herself into a fan favorite, and her move to L.A. became inevitable.
It wasn’t always rainbows and butterflies, though. Growing up in Adelaide as a woman of color, Takara never felt she could do the things she wanted to.
“I grew up in a country where I didn’t see myself represented,” said Takara. “I knew I wanted to live my life just being happy and following my passions, regardless of how unconventional – so I decided to move to a place where there were people who looked like me doing just that.”
America became her home, and the opportunities to follow her dreams began to present themselves. Takara works her ass off every day to be an artist, and she does it because she knows she can do anything she sets her mind to.
In L.A., Takara isn’t only focused on the music. She works at a “cute little coffee shop”, longboards, surfs, hikes, and loves to binge-watch reality TV with friends. She lives with her twin sister and a plethora of pets, and spends her time doing things that make her soul shine through. Which is also something she prioritizes when it comes to her music – letting that soul shine.
“My desired audience is anyone that connects with my music and who I am as a person, because I’m essentially sharing my soul,” she says. “It’s something that I thoroughly enjoy [and] even if there was no one listening I would still be making [it].”
A true Libra, Takara’s lyrics are dynamic and creative. She intertwines deep moments with humor, painting a picture in your head with every line. You’re not just listening to the music, you’re a part of it. It’s relatable. It’s funny. It’s all pretty damn true. In one of my favorite songs, “B.A.H.”, Takara croons along with the beat, “why do I keep fucking these broke ass hoes?” She knows her worth, yet she knows the struggle of modern dating – we often fall for the wrong person at the wrong time. Takara takes those moments and turns them into liquid poetry. She gets it.
People are listening, though. Takara has thousands of streams on every music platform available. Her songs clearly connect with an incredible amount of people. Her ability to share herself has led her to the opportunity to become who she’s always dreamt of being. To be yourself in this world is one of the hardest things, but Takara chooses herself everyday, and her fan-base continues to grow because of it.
“My main goal is just to lead a happy life, and that means following my dreams. Once I’ve done that, anything is possible,” she adds.
Her music is catchy, it’s meaningful, and it’s straight up good. She’s currently working on her next EP, which is slated to be released next spring. Her newest single, “Off My Mind,” is out everywhere now.
